Privacy policy

This site runs its own analytics and sets no advertising or third-party tracking scripts. There is no Google Analytics, no Meta pixel, no session recorder, and no cross-site advertising network on any page.

What we collect

Page views. Path, page type, referrer, coarse device type (desktop / mobile / tablet), and country, sent to our own server. Country is resolved from the request using a local geolocation database, your IP address is not sent to a third party for lookup.

Outbound clicks. When you click through to a tool's website via a /go/… link, we record which tool, which page and which position on it, plus the same coarse device and country fields. This is how we measure which listings are useful, and how affiliate referrals are attributed (disclosure).

Searches and filters used on this site. The query text and result count, and which filters were applied. This is the single most useful signal we have for deciding what to cover next, a search with zero results is a gap in the index.

Tool submissions and votes. Whatever you type into a submission, plus a one-vote-per-tool marker described below.

What we do not collect

• No raw IP addresses stored. IPs are hashed with a server-side secret salt before storage and used only to approximate unique visits and to keep a single person from voting for the same tool repeatedly. The hash is not reversible to your address.
• No advertising cookies, no cross-site profiling, no data sold or shared with brokers.
• No account required. You can use every part of this site without registering, so we hold no profile of you.
• No cookies for analytics. Measurement works without setting an identifying cookie in your browser, which is also why we do not show you a consent wall.
• No sensitive categories. We do not collect or infer health, financial, biometric, political, or precise-location data.

Once you leave this site

A /go/… link hands you off to the vendor's own website. From that moment their privacy policy applies, not ours, including any cookies and tracking they set, and any information you give them when signing up. We receive no data back about what you do there beyond, for affiliate programmes, a confirmation that a referral converted.

Retention

Aggregate click and page-view records are kept for up to 24 months so we can see year-over-year trends, then deleted or reduced to counts. Submissions are kept while the suggestion is under consideration and for a reasonable period afterwards.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete personal data we hold, and to object to processing. Because we store no account and no raw IP, in most cases we hold nothing that identifies you, but if you believe we do, write to privacy@whataifits.com and we will look and act.
