Why people look for an alternative

Midjourney produces the most distinctive images in the category. People still leave, and almost always for one of these:

You cannot try it. There has been no free trial since March 2023. You pay $10 before you know whether it suits your work, unusual in a category where every rival lets you generate something first.

Text in images. Typography inside generated images is the weak spot, and if you make posters, ads or thumbnails it is the whole job.

Commercial and licensing caution. Teams working for clients often need clearer training-data provenance than a general model offers.

Control over style. Reproducing one consistent look across a hundred assets is fiddly; some rivals are built around exactly that.

Every alternative below is in our index with pricing read from the vendor's own page. Note the pattern: most "free" tiers here exclude commercial use, so read that row carefully before you ship client work.

Ideogram AI image generation Freemium 7.5/10

Pick it if: text inside the image

The standard answer when Midjourney mangles your headline. Ideogram is built around rendering readable text in images, which makes it the practical choice for posters, ads and thumbnails.

$8/mo paid, cheaper than Midjourney, and the free tier gives about 10 slow credits a week. Two catches: free outputs are public, and paid priority credits expire monthly with no rollover.

Adobe Firefly AI image generation Freemium 8.0/10

Pick it if: client work that needs licensing clarity

The conservative pick for agency and in-house work: Adobe's model, Adobe's terms, integrated with the tools your designers already use. 25 generative credits a month free, paid from $9.99/mo.

The complaint is the credit system itself, a video or partner-model generation can consume far more credits than you expect, so budgeting is harder than the headline price suggests.

Leonardo AI AI image generation Freemium 7.4/10

Pick it if: daily volume without paying

The most generous daily free allowance here: 150 tokens per day, personal use only. If you generate in bursts most days, this outlasts every monthly-credit rival.

Paid is $12/mo. Budgeting is the weak point: token cost varies with GPU load and there is no published per-model rate table, so the same job can cost different amounts on different days.

Recraft AI image generation Freemium 7.1/10

Pick it if: brand-consistent vector and icon sets

Built for design systems rather than one-off images: consistent styles across a set, and vector output that survives being resized. That is the gap Midjourney genuinely leaves.

$12/mo; free tier is 50 credits/day with no commercial licence and a public gallery. Credit consumption is uneven across features. Creative Upscale alone is a notably expensive action.

Krea AI AI image generation Freemium 6.7/10

Pick it if: real-time iteration on a look

Krea's realtime canvas is the fastest way to converge on a look, you steer the image as it renders rather than rewriting prompts and waiting. $9/mo, cheaper than Midjourney, with 100 free compute units a day.

Support is the trade-off: no official phone or email channel. Discord is reportedly the only route, which some teams cannot accept.

SeaArt AI AI image generation Freemium 6.4/10

Pick it if: the cheapest paid plan

$4.79/mo, the cheapest real subscription in this ranking, plus a free daily allowance of about 25 standard images. For high-volume personal experimentation the economics are hard to argue with.

Expect a learning curve: the interface is dense with model and LoRA terminology that assumes you already know the ecosystem.

Scenario AI image generation Freemium 7.0/10

Pick it if: a repeatable custom style

Scenario is the answer to "every image must look like ours": train a style model on your own references and generate against it, which is how game and product teams keep hundreds of assets coherent.

$15/mo, free tier 50 credits/day, no card required. It asks more of you upfront, a usable style model needs a curated reference set of roughly 5–100 images.

Pick by what Midjourney was failing at

Your reason for leaving Switch to
Want to test before paying Leonardo (150/day) or Krea (100 units/day)
Text in images comes out wrong Ideogram
Client work, licensing must be clean Adobe Firefly
One consistent style across many assets Recraft or Scenario
Purely a budget decision SeaArt at $4.79/mo

Read the commercial-use row before you switch

This is the trap in image generation. Leonardo's free tier is personal use only. Recraft's free output carries no commercial licence and lands in a public gallery. Ideogram's free generations are public. Krea's free tier excludes commercial use.

In other words: a free tier is for evaluating quality, not for producing client deliverables. Midjourney at least does not pretend otherwise, it simply charges from the start.

The other thing that changes

Credits are the unit of confusion across this whole category. Firefly's credits vary by model, Recraft's vary by feature, Leonardo's vary by GPU load, and Ideogram's expire monthly. Two tools at "$12/mo" can differ by several times in how much work you actually get. If you are switching to save money, price a real week of your own output rather than comparing headline plans.

Questions people ask

Is there a free alternative to Midjourney?
Several, with caveats. Leonardo gives 150 tokens a day and Krea 100 compute units a day, both personal use only. Ideogram's free tier makes outputs public. None of these free tiers grant a commercial licence, so they are for evaluation rather than client work.
Which alternative is best for text in images?
Ideogram, rendering readable typography inside images is what it is built around, and it is the usual reason people move off Midjourney for poster, ad and thumbnail work.
Is anything cheaper than Midjourney's $10/mo?
Yes: SeaArt at $4.79/mo, Reve at $7.99/mo, Ideogram at $8/mo and Krea at $9/mo all undercut it. Compare credit allowances rather than headline prices, the same money buys very different volumes.
Does Midjourney still have no free trial?
Correct, free trials ended in March 2023 and have not returned, which is the single most common reason people look for alternatives before they have even tried it.
